Controlling Chemical and Biological Weapons History and Introduction Chemical and biological weapons (CBWs) have been used over the ages as an effective means of warfare. The earliest incident of biological weapons (BWs) occurred in the third century B.C., when the Carthaginian leader Hannibal filled up pots with venomous snakes and threw them onto enemy ships.
Nerve agents classically include the organophosphorus (OP) compounds (e.g., soman, sarin, cyclosarin, tabun, and VX) originally developed as insecticides, but repurposed and refined for use as warfare agents as their extreme toxicity was recognized (Sidell et al., 2008). Although developed and stockpiled for use in Germany during World War II, nerve agents were not used on the battlefield.

It was possible to use the strengths of existing triage systems for proposing a new protocol for the triage of nerve agents.
Possible long-term effects of such warfare include: chronic illness caused by exposure to chemical and biological agents; delayed effects in persons directly exposed (causation of cancer, severe damage to the human foetus, and detrimental alterations in the human gene); organic, particularly nervous, damage which lasts throughout life, even though the person is not killed.
